ATV trip with a working German Shepherd
We love the solid nerves, working drive and unparalleled adaptability of working German Shepherds. They seem to answer the call to duty regardless of the task at hand. Whether serving on the border sniffing narcotics, herding livestock on a ranch, chasing down bad guys in police work, or competing at Schutzhund dog sports, the true working German Shepherd excels.
Just this weekend, I took my female working line Shepherd on her first ATV trip. Although she had never ridden on a four wheeler, she jumped up in the seat on command and we took off. We road themountains above Reno, Nevada and engaged in some serious hill climbs and off-camber trail riding. Throughout the day-long ride, my 63 pound German Shepherd was a trooper. In fact, she does whatever I ask her to do without hesitation. Lesser dogs would have jumped out on some of the rocky trails and spooky descents.
After about an hour of trail riding, my companion curled up next to me and put her head in my lap. She actually fell asleep on some of the bumpiest parts of the trail. I took these two photos by placing my point and shoot camera on a rock.
