With heightened security all over the world, it is becoming more and more common to see dogs in airports, train stations, major public buildings, and in or near, popular tourist attractions.  These dogs are not there enjoying the sights with their owners.  Instead, they are working. Trained German Shepherds are often a vital part of these teams of dogs and safety personnel.  With their intelligence, agility, and loyalty, German Shepherds have, historically, made excellent protection dogs.

The dogs we see in public spaces working with law enforcement, or military, personnel, are usually sniffing for, or looking for, signs of bomb or drug paraphernalia.  These dogs have gone through many hours of training.  They are often chosen for this training due to their intrinsic intelligence and working drive, which is why German Shepherds are so popular.  The handlers have gone through numerous hours of training, as well.  While we are not allowed to interact with law enforcement dogs while they are working, these German Shepherd protection dogs are like any other dogs when they are off-duty, they love to play and hang out with the handler’s family.
